Rotary Phase Converters

What is a rotary phase converter? Abbreviated RPC, a rotary phase converter is a device that allows running three phase loads using single phase electric power, by means of a rotating three phase induction motor called an idler. If the idler's rotor spins while two terminals are energized, it induces voltage in the third terminals that is shifted by +/- 120 degrees from the voltage between the first two terminals, thus generating three phase electricity.

RPCs are used where three phase devices need to be used, but only single phase power is available. Three phase machines cannot run on single phase power without a device to generate three phase power. Since prices (and quality) of used three phase machines are usually more favorable than those of their single phase counterparts, demand exists for phase converters.

Phase Converter: A phase converter or rotary phase converter is a three phase electrical machine that is energized by single phase power. The phase converter uses the process of induction and capacitors to convert a third phase to be utilized by electrical equipment acceptable to phase converter power.

Rotary Converter: A rotary converter has a rotary member that helps to pass magnetic flux by a coil to process electron movement or amperes. Rotary converter technology has been around for awhile. Farmers would use a crude form of rotary converter for pumps and high horsepower machinery. A rotary converter electrically is a simple machine. To build a rotary converter you could use a standard motor. Convert-A-Phase uses new designs with special electrical windings and rotors. They are true rotary converter phase converters that qualify as the best phase generator.

Rotophase: Rotophase is a common term used for a phase converter or rotary converter. It was so common that one manufacturer used the name rotophase as his trade name. Even though rotorphase is used a lot it is just another name for any company's phase converter or rotary converter. The name rotophase will be around for a long time but we hope to change the thinking to convert-a-phase.

Static Converter: A static converter is simply a bank of capacitors that help energize a three phase motor. The static in static converter means that once the system is started the static converter is taken out of the system and not used. A rotary converter or phase converter stays in the electrical system for overload relief.

Converter: Converter also refers to a rotary converter, phase converter, static converter, phase conversion, or even some of the brand names like rotorphase, phasemaster, phase-a-matic or convert-a-phase. It is a synonymous term for phase conversion. As a generic term converter could mean phasemaster or a rotary converter referring to a product or process.

Voltage Stabilizer: The term voltage stabilizer in the world of a rotary converter refers to a problem associated with rotary converter but not necessarily with a phase converter referring to a static converter. The rotating field of a rotary converter produces a high voltage leg of the three phase system. Some applications need to have that voltage stabilizer. A voltage stabilizer is not necessary with the use of a convert-a-phase rotary converter because of the technology it uses. A phase converter that has a rotating member and used tap-able capacitors can be applied so that the voltage stabilizer is not necessary. The convert-a-phase rotary converter can be extremely functional with less capacitors and the dropping of them can act like a voltage stabilizer.

Phase Conversion: Phase conversion is really an incorrect term. A phase is not converted but produced. Phase conversion really means in the world of a rotary converter that an extra phase is produced in a two phase line that is usually represented by a 1 to 3 phase call out. The 1 to 3 phase is actually two to three phase discussed later. The term phase conversion should be renamed phase production. A convert-a-phase converter or phase converter or better yet rotary converter may be renamed a convert-a-phase phase generator. Phase generator is a more accurate name for what is taking place. Phase conversion only takes place in the sense that one of the phases of the 1 to 3 phase system is connected to the manufactured phase by a capacitor to maintain a correct phase angle with the existing single phase system.
